Session One:  More Than Meets the Eye: Writing Effective Alt Text
Alternate (alt) text for images is essential for accessibility, but it doesn’t always
function the way you might expect. This session will explain how images and alt text
interact—and why they are not inherently tied together. Participants will learn what happens when alt text is lost (such as when copying an image or exporting a Canva design as a JPEG) and gain practical strategies for ensuring visuals remain accessible. By the end, you’ll know how to write effective alt text and avoid common pitfalls that can unintentionally make course
materials inaccessible.
Presenter: David Gardner, Associate Professor, School of the Sciences-Computer Science
